The Cryptic Canvas!

paintingOne of those office time wasters that is actually quite fun, for movie buffs that is! Some time ago, I posted something called “The Hunt for Horror” where clues to classic horror movies were hidden in a painting.

Well, EMPIRE magazine has done just that but with 50 classic movies instead! I’ve spent the past 30 minutes scouring through the entire painting and only found 12… See how many you can spot!

Life’s Ups

colby_smlEvery now and then, I come across a tale that not only inspires but reminds us that there are still some decency in the world. I created this movie blog to celebrate the wonders of film making and the joys and impact of simply, telling a story. So it is here where I would like to share with you, the true story of a little girl whose last wish on Earth, was to watch a movie.

Colby Curtin, a 10 year-old girl from Huntington Beach California, was treated to the trailer of the Pixar latest animated movie while watching “Monsters VS Aliens”. She was immediately captivated by the high adventures of the main character Carl Fredrickson’s flying house of balloons that she promptly told her mother that she had to watch it. It was as normal a request from any 10 year-old but Colby is no ordinary child. 3 years ago, she was diagnosed with a rare form of vascular cancer that the doctors did not have a positive prognosis for.

The film opened in the USA in early June and it was apparent that Colby’s condition worsened to the point where she was bedridden and could not get to the theater. So a family friend made some desperate calls to Pixar and Disney for any help that they could render. It wasn’t before long that Pixar furnished one of its employees with a DVD copy of the movie and flew said employee down to Huntington Beach to hold a private screening of the movie for Colby.

It was her dying wish to see the film and she did just that before passing away only 7 hours after the movie’s curtains closed.

Cynics would probably attribute this to a publicity stunt on Disney/Pixar’s part but at the end of the day, a little girl wanted to watch their latest film before she died. The title was “Up” and that is probably where she is right now.

Dedicated to Colby Curtin

80’s Cartoon Movie Teasers!

80s cartoonsYou know you are old when Hollywood starts to cull your childhood for potential movie franchises. Michael Bay (”Bad Boys” and “The Island”) pillaged our memories of “Transformers” two years ago and Stephen Sommers (”The Mummy” and “The Mummy 2″) is in line to do just that with “GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra” later this summer.

So, taking a cue from Hollywood, cartoonist Dan Meth produced and animated this selection of teaser trailers based on what he feels our current slate of directors would do if given the chance to ‘re-invent’ 80’s hit cartoons series. Give me my “Bionic Six” and “Starcom” movies now!!!

Enjoy!

Star Wars: The Old Republic!

swor_logo_layered_blk_bg

Star_Wars_Tales_by_UdonCrew I do not normally post anything on games but I’ll make an exception here as its content had its origins in celluloid. “Star Wars: The Old Republic” is a Massive Multiplayer Online (MMO) game developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts. For those who played “Knights of the Old Republic”, this game takes place right after the events of the last installment.

Recently the powers that be, released a new cinematic trailer for the game and well, it’s quite a beauty to watch. Heck, it’s 3 minute plus length is more exciting and cinematic than Episodes 1-3 put together! This is how Jedi and Sith were supposed to battle! Ol’George could take a pointer or two from some of the shots executed here.

Green Lantern’s Might!

GreenLanternBanner

I’m constantly amazed at some of the work that can be done nowadays with a personal computer and a little ingenuity. “Green Lantern” is one of the comic book properties that has eluded a film treatment. Our everyman, Jaron Pitts has cobbled together clips from no less than 25 movies to produce this little gem of a fan trailer. Enjoy!

Oh, and any studio execs at Warner Bros watching this, better hire Nathan Fillion…

Who Watches the Watchmen? We Do!

watchmenbrd

Mark your Calendars for July 28th 2009 as Watchmen Blu-Ray Discs and DVD will be released!

Here are the specifications for both the DVD and the Blu-Ray. Just the fact that there is 25 minutes worth of extra footage should be worth the price alone. The only drawback is that they did not include the “Tales of the Black Freighter” animated movie with this set which would have to be bought separately. Who knows, they might release an “Supremely Penultimate Edition” in a couple of months what includes everything but this is good enough for me!

-Director’s Cut (additional 25 min.) — Newly included footage contains more Rorschach and a scene of Hollis Mason’s death.

-Warner Bros. Maximum Movie Mode [With Watchmen Director Zack Snyder as our host, we’ll dive deep into the intricacies of the Watchmen.]

-Director walk-ons with scene analysis

-Picture-in-picture video from the cast and crew

-Side-by-side comparisons of the graphic novel and the film

-Timeline comparisons of our world events to those from Watchmen

-Photo galleries of production stills and storyboards

-The Phenomenon: The Comic That Changed Comics [Learn how the
subversive, thematically complex, award winning comic that changed
literature, inspired analytical debate, and won countless fans, was created]

-Real Superheroes, Real Vigilantes [Explores the fascination and psychology behind real-world vigilantes and where that behavior crosses over into actually donning the hood and behaving as superheroes.]

-Mechanics: Technologies of a Fantastic World [The creators of Watchmen had a great understanding of engineering and science, allowing for plausible mechanics in their characters tools and the world itself. This featurette will guide the viewer through the filmmakers process of turning these technologies into cinematic reality]

-My Chemical Romance Desolation Row Music Video

-BD-Live with even more content

-Digital Copy

Trailer Rehash!

Some time quite far back, I posted something called “Trailer Mashups” where geeks around the world came up with remade trailers of classic movies. Well, the latest in that tradition has landed us this hilarious take on “The Wicker Man” remake starring Nicholas Cage. For those who have not seen this film, it is originally rooted in the ‘thriller/horror’ genre and deals with neo-paganism and human sacrifice. Creepy stuff no?

Now check out the trailer remix!

The Hunt for Horror!

M&M MuralIts been a busy day for movie related news and tidbits. A couple of friends have sent me this that I couldn’t pass up!

I just love movie related games (of course, since movies are my life!). Here is another one that not only tests your movie knowledge but your visual perception as well! M&Ms made a flash based game to tie in with their “Dark Chocolate” launch that lets you hunt for horror movie references within a set mural. There are 50 of them in all! I only managed to find 33 so far. How many can you spot? Hint: Not all of them are ‘full-on’ horror movies! Thanks to Michelle and Derek who alerted me to this lovely office pastime. Haha.

Movie Poster Remixes!

Early on during the inception of this blog, I featured something called “Trailer Remixes” where all you fan boys at home, with a copy of “Windows Movie Maker” and little too much time on their hands, cooked up fake trailers for classic movies. Today, Worth1000.com ran a contest where all you photoshop gurus create fake posters of popular movies by changing only ONE letter of the movie title and the results are just downright hilarious! Now, if only they did a poster for “The Last and the Furious”…

Migration season…

Maxine MovingMy sincere apologies to everyone who has tried to access my site for the past few days as blogsome.com was shifting their databases to another server. Everything seems to be fine and dandy for the time being (lets hope it lasts!) and now all the links work, comments can be submitted and I can finally post articles again! Managed to catch a number of films while blogsome.com was doing their weekly ‘migration’ and their reviews will be up shortly if nothing goes terribly wrong.

Its kinda hard to maintain a regular posting schedule when blogsome is plagued with rampant shut downs. Perhaps its time to find some proper server space… Anyone has some cheap server space to spare? *hint*hint*
